Monday night highlights!
Wayne Newtons’ 20 Meter yacht sank over the week end…I know you needed to know that. There is more here: http://metronews.ca/news/world/830637/wayne-newtons-yacht-sinks-at-marina/
Speaking of disasters, Australia, particularly Sydney is suffering from incredibly hot weather and high winds which are blowing three fires towards the city. At last count about 120,000 hectares of land have burned. That really did not mean much to me when I read it, other than it is an area larger than New York. So I looked up the amount of biomass (grass, trees, etc.) on a hectare in Australia and found anywhere from 1400 to 1688 Kg/Hectare for grazing and crop growing. If you figure 30% of that mass is carbon, then burning that area produces more metric tonnes of CO2 than all of Canada does in one 24-hr period. I have yet to look at the total number of fires burning and volcanoes erupting world-wide, but just this one blaze highlights how our human, carbon footprint compares to natures.
A good video of the blaze here, no commercials: http://www.itv.com/news/story/2013-10-18/australia-wildfires/ , Crop yield information for Australia: http://www.publish.csiro.au/paper/A97071 , http://www.tradingeconomics.com/australia/cereal-yield-kg-per-hectare-wb-data.html, and of course, CO2 emissions by country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita
Coincidence? Back in May of this year, India recommended a 10-year moratorium on growing genetically modified foods (GMO) in that country. Experts told the government that there were too many unknowns and what third-party information they could find on GMO use around the world was not good. http://www.civilspedia.com/2013/05/technical-expert-committee-seeks.html. Two weeks later, Goldman Sachs downgraded India from ‘neutral’ to a ‘sell’ status and wiped out over 21% of Indias’ market value. http://www.civilspedia.com/2013/05/goldman-sachs-pushed-down-grade-of.html
But what do I know from politics? Only this; I don’t like where the once proud USofA is heading and I don’t like that it is pulling Canada along with it. Now, in an issue of the Winnipeg Free Press, I find that the actions of Canada’s ‘Harper’ government, which has polarized Canada over the past six years, are things to which US Republicans should aspire. But that’s just my emotional take on this article…I didn’t know Ted Cruz gave up Canadian citizenship? Bye-bye Ted. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/opinion/analysis/republicans-could-learn-from-canadian-conservatives-228579071.html
